Choosing a video hosting server is not a single decision. It is four decisions stacked together: where the master files sit, what transcodes them, what delivers them, and what stops them from being downloaded. Get the first three right and the fourth wrong and you have built a very fast piracy distribution network.

What is Video Server Hosting?
Video server hosting is the infrastructure that stores your video files, converts them into adaptive bitrate renditions, and delivers those renditions to viewers over HTTP. A plain web host will not do this well, because video changes the shape of the workload in three specific ways.
Bytes delivered dwarf bytes stored. A 10 GB library streamed 5,000 times a month pushes several terabytes of egress. Storage is a rounding error; delivery is the bill.
Delivery is bursty and concurrent. Adaptive bitrate streaming splits each video into 2–10 second segments, so a single viewer generates hundreds of HTTP requests. A thousand concurrent viewers generate hundreds of thousands. Origin servers cannot absorb that without a CDN in front.
Files are the product. Unlike a web page, the asset has commercial value in itself. Anything served as a plain progressive MP4 over a public URL can be pulled down with a browser extension in seconds.
Those three properties are why the stack has a standard shape: object storage for masters, a transcoding service for renditions, a CDN for delivery, an HLS or DASH player for playback, and DRM or encryption for protection. The providers below solve different subsets of that stack, and mixing them is normal.

Synergy Research Group put worldwide cloud infrastructure services spend at $143.4 billion in Q2 2026, up 43% year over year — the fastest growth the category has recorded in eight years, driven largely by AI workloads. Trailing-twelve-month revenue for the sector is around $500 billion.

CDN market share is more confusing, because the three commonly cited measurements count entirely different things and cannot be ranked against each other.

The short version: Akamai leads on revenue, Cloudflare leads on number of sites. Cloudflare’s site-count dominance is heavily weighted by its free tier, so it overstates share of paid video delivery traffic. Note also that W3Techs reports 71.2% of sites use none of the reverse proxies it detects, so its percentages are not exclusive shares of the whole web.
One structural change matters for anyone evaluating CDNs: Edgio (formerly Limelight Networks) entered Chapter 11 and ceased CDN operations. Akamai acquired select Edgio assets — customer contracts and non-exclusive patent licences, not the network or staff — with court approval on 26 November 2024. The buyer list for CDN capacity is smaller than it was three years ago.

Two clarifications worth making, because both are frequently reported wrong. Azure Video Indexer was not retired — its dependency on a Media Services account was removed ahead of the AMS shutdown and the service remains available. Google’s Cloud Video Intelligence API was not retired either; only its celebrity recognition sub-feature was removed, after 16 September 2025.
Hyperscale Video Hosting Servers
1. Amazon Web Services
AWS holds 28% of worldwide cloud infrastructure and offers the most complete set of first-party video building blocks. It is also the default reference architecture for video-on-demand, which means integration examples, Terraform modules and community tooling are abundant.
The AWS video stack has four parts. Amazon S3 stores masters and renditions. AWS Elemental MediaConvert handles file-based transcoding, from $0.0075 per output minute, with support for HEVC, AV1, Apple ProRes, 8K at 120fps and HDR. AWS Elemental MediaPackage handles just-in-time packaging into HLS and DASH. Amazon CloudFront delivers to viewers across 700+ points of presence, and AWS DRM integration is available through MediaPackage for Widevine, FairPlay and PlayReady via a third-party key provider.

Two changes here catch people out. The CloudFront free allowance is now 1 TB per month, permanently — not 50 GB, and no longer limited to the first twelve months. And the AWS Free Tier was restructured on 15 July 2025: new accounts choose a Free Plan or Paid Plan and receive $100 in credits on signup plus up to $100 more for completing setup activities, with the Free Plan running up to six months or until credits are exhausted. The old “5 GB S3, 20,000 GET requests, 12 months” model applies only to accounts opened before that date. Around 30 services retain always-free monthly allowances.

Where it costs you: egress beyond the free tier is among the most expensive of any provider on this list, and the pricing model has enough dimensions (storage class, request type, region, transfer path) that forecasting requires real effort.
AWS in Production: Netflix
Netflix runs its control plane, encoding pipeline and data platform on AWS, and has done since its 2008–2016 migration. It is worth being precise about the split, because this case study is regularly misreported: AWS handles compute, encoding and storage; video delivery runs on Open Connect, Netflix’s own purpose-built CDN with appliances embedded inside ISP networks. Netflix does not stream from CloudFront. The lesson for anyone at scale is that the compute and delivery decisions are separable, and the economics of each diverge sharply as volume grows.
2. Microsoft Azure
Azure holds 20% of the cloud infrastructure market and grew 43% year over year in Q2 2026. For video specifically, Azure’s position changed fundamentally in 2024: Azure Media Services was retired on 30 June 2024, taking with it Microsoft’s first-party encoding, packaging, live streaming and built-in DRM licence delivery.
What that means in practice: after retirement, AMS accounts went read-only for roughly 90 days and were then deleted. Video files sitting in a customer’s own Storage account were unaffected, but streaming endpoints, live events and asset metadata were destroyed. Microsoft’s guidance is to move encoding to partners such as Bitmovin, Harmonic or MediaKind.
Azure remains a strong choice for storage and delivery, and an obvious one for organisations already committed to Microsoft licensing. The components are Azure Blob Storage for objects, Azure Front Door Standard/Premium for delivery, and Azure Video Indexer for AI-driven metadata extraction — the last of which is still active and no longer requires a Media Services account.

Where it costs you: the base fee on Front Door means the entry cost is non-zero even at low traffic, and the loss of Media Services means you are assembling encoding from third parties rather than buying it from Microsoft.
3. Google Cloud
Google Cloud reached 15% share in Q2 2026 and posted the fastest growth of the top three at 82% year over year. For video it has a distinct advantage: the delivery network is the same physical infrastructure that carries YouTube.
The stack is Cloud Storage for objects, the Transcoder API for encoding (generally available since October 2021), and two separate delivery products that are easy to confuse. Cloud CDN is the general-purpose CDN for web content, APIs and images. Media CDN is the newer, media-specific product built on Google’s edge network, designed for large-scale video streaming and large-file downloads, with cheaper tiered egress at high volume. If you are streaming video at scale on Google Cloud, Media CDN is the product to evaluate, not Cloud CDN.

Where it costs you: direct storage egress at $0.12 per GB is the highest of the three hyperscalers, so serving video straight from a bucket without a CDN in front is the most expensive mistake you can make on this platform.
4. Alibaba Cloud
Alibaba Cloud is the practical answer for delivering video inside mainland China and across much of APAC, where the other providers face latency and regulatory friction.

5. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
OCI is the outlier on this list, and the reason is egress. Oracle includes 10 TB per month of free outbound data transfer across all OCI services, then charges $0.0085 per GB — roughly a tenth of AWS or Azure’s per-GB rate. Pricing is also consistent across regions rather than varying by geography.
Object Storage Standard is around $0.0255 per GB per month, the most expensive hot tier of the major clouds, and Archive is $0.0026 per GB. For video, that trade is almost always worth taking: a library delivering ten times its stored volume each month will save far more on egress than it loses on storage.

CDN and Specialist Video Hosting Providers
6. Akamai
Akamai remains the CDN revenue leader, reporting $4.208 billion for full-year 2025, up 5% year over year. It is also no longer purely a CDN. Akamai acquired Linode for approximately $900 million in March 2022 and launched Akamai Connected Cloud in February 2023 — a distributed compute and storage platform spanning roughly 4,100 points of presence across 135 countries, pitched explicitly on CDN-style egress economics rather than hyperscaler pricing.
For media, Adaptive Media Delivery remains the core product, covering adaptive bitrate streaming, origin shielding, token authentication and media analytics. Akamai also absorbed several hundred Edgio customers in late 2024 via the asset purchase, giving them a migration path before Edgio’s network shut down.

7. Cloudflare
Cloudflare reported $2,167.9 million in revenue for 2025, up 30%, and serves as reverse proxy for 24.2% of all websites. For video, its significance is a pricing model rather than a feature: R2 object storage charges zero egress fees, at roughly $0.015 per GB per month for storage.
Cloudflare Stream is the managed video product, and it prices per minute rather than per gigabyte: $5 per 1,000 minutes stored per month and $1 per 1,000 minutes delivered, which works out to about $0.06 per watch-hour. Ingest, encoding and delivery are all included, with no egress line item at all. One caveat that surprises people on their first invoice: each adaptive bitrate rendition Stream generates counts against your stored minutes, so a video encoded into five renditions consumes five times its duration in storage.

The egress model is what makes it relevant to video. Backblaze includes free egress up to three times your monthly stored data, then charges $0.01 per GB. More importantly, egress to Cloudflare, Fastly and other Bandwidth Alliance partners is free and unmetered. Pairing B2 as origin with Cloudflare as CDN produces a stack with effectively zero delivery cost from origin to edge.

The 1:1 egress ratio is the deciding constraint. A 5 TB library serving 5 TB per month fits comfortably. The same library serving 50 TB per month does not, and Wasabi is the wrong tool for it.

Raw storage prices have converged into a narrow band — roughly $0.006 to $0.026 per GB across every provider here. Egress has not converged at all, and spans zero to $0.28 per GB. For video, egress is the decision. Delivery bytes exceed stored bytes by one to two orders of magnitude in any active library, so the storage column below is largely noise and the egress column is the answer.

Three things have shifted in how video is encoded and delivered, and each has a direct cost or compatibility consequence.
Codec adoption. NETINT’s 2026 State of Video Encoding survey found HEVC/H.265 in production at 65% of responding organisations, with a further 20% planning deployment. AV1 is in production at 17%, with 40% planning deployment. AV1 is royalty-free; HEVC carries three separate patent pools (MPEG LA, HEVC Advance, Velos Media), which is a licensing cost and an administrative burden rather than a technical one. On efficiency, an independent analysis of a live Netflix AV1 stream measured average bitrate 48.1% below the equivalent H.264 stream — a single-title measurement rather than a platform-wide statistic, but directionally consistent with published AV1 benchmarks. 2. Why does video streaming need a different kind of hosting?
